2016/2017 School year

Spring Term

This term we will be learning about space and reading the story 'Whatever next'.  We will be learning facts about Space, packing a healthy picnic, writing lists, ordering events and learning one more and less.

September

We have had a fabulous start to the school year.  The children have settled into Reception well and are getting used to the different routines throughout the day.

Our first topic was looking at the story Harry and the dinosaurs.  We compared our classroom to Harry's, talked about starting school-how we felt on our first day compared to now, our class rules and how to be a good friend.

Over the summer the Foundation Stage classroom was completely redecorated. Here are some pictures of our classroom.

2015-2016 School Year:

Fire brigade: We had some visitors from today from the fire brigade who came to talk to us about how they help people. We learnt about the importance of having a fire alarm in your house and how to react if we were ever to catch fire! Then we went outside to look at the fire engine. We got to sit inside, try on the helmets and spray water using the fire hoses. The firemen turned up the water pressure when Miss Southwart and Miss Singh had a turn. The children found it very funny when we tripped backwards. Last of all we heard the sirens that let cars know that a fire engine is coming.

5th February 2016

Today we have had a very busy day of building.  We had a 'girls only' day in the construction where we saw lots of masterpieces created.  There were also lots of interesting creations at the junk modelling table, with children using their own ideas to build and decorate different models.

Chinese New Year

We have been celebrating Chinese New Year by reading the story 'Goldyluck and the Three Panda Bears'.  The children have really enjoyed this story and spotted some similarities between this story and Goldilocks.  We have also had a Chinese dragon come dancing through the classroom, tasted noodles, made a healthy stir fry to cook at home and eaten fortune cookies.  The children have been busy creating shopping lists for their stir fry's, writing instructions to cook noodles, ordering the animals from the Zodiac story and making up their own dragon dances.

Friday 22nd January: Today we were told the story of St Peter walking on water. St Peter is the Saint who our school is named after. In this story Peter shows qualities we encourage in our classroom; taking risks and trying new things, showing courage, trusting others and being willing to ask for help.

Friday 22nd January

We have had a very busy two weeks learning about Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  We have been making porridge to taste, most of us liked it but some of us weren't so keen! This week we have also thought about our favourite part of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and have produced some wonderful writing.  We have been also been thinking about staying healthy and chose healthy toppings for porridge which all the children took home to have for their breakfast this morning.  I am very pleased to hear that so many children enjoyed eating their healthy porridge for breakfast!

What a fabulous first week we have had back at school.  The children have all started back ready to learn.

We have been looking for clues to work out who ate Miss Southwart's porridge and started reading our new story, Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

We have also been very busy outside and have started to create our garden where we will be growing lots of different plants, fruits and vegetables.  So far we have planted some strawberry plants and raspberry canes, we are looking forward to them growing so that we can taste the different fruits!

7th January 2016 Stay and Read

Thank you to the parents who came and listened to us talk about reading today!  We are really looking forward to Stay and Read starting next week and hope to see lots of you there.

As a reminder to parents it starts next Thursday (8:40-9am).

Please see a link to the powerpoint below.

Reading and the curriculum

Gruffalo Assembly

Today we finished our Gruffalo topic off with our class assembly.  The children have been very busy learning the story, their lines and the Gruffalo song.  I would like to say a huge Thank you to all the parents, carers and relatives that came to watch our assembly.  Well done Reception you were all fantastic!!

25/11/15: Oreo and Friends: Today we had some different animals visit us in school. We were very lucky to meet some of the animals from the story of the Gruffalo. We met a fox, racoon, skunk, armadillo, snake, hedgehog and a chameleon. Some of us were a bit worried about meeting the animals at first, but everybody built up the courage to stroke or hold an animal. Well done!

13/11/15 A creature with terrible tusks, claws and teeth is coming...

4/11/15: Today we had somebody come into school to show us some traditional Diwali dances.

We have been busy learning about Diwali

Some of the activities we have set up ready for our first stay and play session this year.

This morning Reception and Nursery went into the school woods for our shared reading session. While we were there we read some more of the story 'Rama and Sita'. We were very lucky to have the story acted out for us as it was told.

Stay and Play:

Stay and play will be starting on Monday mornings from 8.40 till 9.00.  This will give you the chance to spend time playing with your child in school, taking part in some of the activities we will be doing over the school week, as well as the time to look at your child's learning journey.

What a fantastic few days we have had after half term.  The children have all come back to school refreshed and ready to learn.  We will be learning all about Diwali the Hindu festival of light.  You will be receiving a sheet telling you what we are learning during this topic, as well as ideas for how to support your child's learning at home, on parent's evening.

We celebrated black history week by reading the story of Anansi the Spider.

In reception we all like to spend time on the computers or the big interactive whiteboard so it is really important that we learn how to stay safe when using technology. We looked at a story about Smartie the penguin who is also learning how to stay safe when on the computer (there is a link to the story on our class page). We now know to always ask an adult for help when playing on a computer.

European languages day: We decided that we would learn about Poland. We looked at where Poland is in the world and what the flag looks like. We also tried to learn how to sing Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes in Polish as well as cooking some Polish food and trying some biscuits. We all liked the biscuits but some children weren't as sure about the potatoe pancakes.

!9th September 2015

With the rugby world cup starting, we decided to spend a day learning about rugby and the world cup.   We were lucky to have some coaches come into school and have a session of tag rugby.  It was a fantastic session and the children all really enjoyed themselves.

Sustrans came into school to help us learn to ride a bike without stabilisers. All the children really impressed us with how hard they tried and some children even managed to ride their bike without stabilisers for the first time! Well done!
